SIA: Semiconductor Sales Worldwide Total $11.10 Billion in January; Second-Highest January in Nearly a Decade SAN JOSE, Calif., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- WORLDWIDE SALES OF SEMICONDUCTORS REACHED $11.10 BILLION IN JANUARY, THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY A YEAR THAT CHIP SALES HAVE EXCEEDED YEAR-AGO TOTALS, THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (SIA) REPORTED TODAY. JANUARY SALES CLIMBED 1.2 PERCENT FROM JANUARY 1998 FIGURES OF $10.97 BILLION, making the second-highest sales total for a January in nearly a decade. REVENUES ROSE ON STRENGTHENED SALES IN ASIA PACIFIC AND EUROPE, WHERE SALES INCREASED 9.1 PERCENT AND 2.8 PERCENT, RESPECTIVELY, FROM JANUARY 1998. "The Asia Pacific market continues to show signs of recovery," said SIA President George Scalise. "Economic reforms brought on by the financial crisis are taking effect. January's sales reflect a continuation of the strength in semiconductor sales that began to emerge in the fourth quarter of 1998." THE AMERICAS AND JAPANESE MARKETS DECREASED SLIGHTLY FROM JANUARY 1998, DROPPING 2.7 PERCENT AND 2.5, RESPECTIVELY, FROM JANUARY 1998. SALES IN JANUARY REMAINED RELATIVELY FLAT FROM DECEMBER 1998; January historically experiences sluggish sales due to the continued holiday effects of a shorter work month and the aftermath of Christmas buys. JANUARY REVENUES DECLINED 1.9 PERCENT FROM DECEMBER 1998, which is consistent with traditional patterns. THE EUROPEAN AND AMERICAS MARKETS SHOWED THE MOST EFFECT, DIPPING 4.2 PERCENT AND 1.8 PERCENT, RESPECTIVELY. JAPAN AND ASIA PACIFIC DECREASED 1 PERCENT AND .5 PERCENT, RESPECTIVELY. The SIA's Global Sales Report is a three-month rolling average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represents 70 companies.
