Possis Medical FDA OK -3: Device Called Alternative To Drugs

In its press release Monday, the FDA said the Coronary Angiojet Rheolytic thrombectomy
system "will provide an alternative treatment to so-called clot-busting drugs, and will
be particularly useful for patients in whom these drugs cannot be used."
The FDA described the device as a coronary catheter system that "shoots a jet of
saline solution back into the tip of the catheter to suck out blood clots."
Treatment with the Coronary AngioJet Rheolytic thrombectomy system takes about one
minute, and afterwards, patients can undergo angioplasty to remove the blockage in the
artery.
The system was already approved to treat blood clots in dialysis grafts.
The agency said the device was approved based on studies of 731 patients in the U.S.
and Canada.
