Compaq To Boost Taiwan Purchases
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), already the largest foreign buyer of Taiwan's information products, will boost purchases from the island to $7 billion in 1999 from last year's $5.5 billion, a company executive said Monday.
Compaq also will establish a research center here to encourage leading-edge manufacturing methods among local electronics companies, said Greg Petsch, senior vice-president for global manufacturing at Compaq.
The center will promote technologies such as Internet commerce to help reduce turnaround times for Compaq's orders from Taiwan, which are slightly slower than Compaq's global average of eight to nine days, Petsch said
He did not say how much the company would invest, but the China Times Express newspaper quoted unidentified sources saying the company could pour as much as $30 million into the center.
Compaq is already a key customer for a batch of local technology companies, including Inventec Corp., Mitac Inc. and Chuntex Electronics Co., and the top overall foreign buyer of Taiwanese information products, according to the Economics Ministry.
Taiwan is the world's third biggest producer of computer equipment after the United States and Japan, with output rising 12 percent last year to $34 billion.
Taiwanese computer chip makers have predicted a double-digit growth in revenues amid a cyclical upswing in the industry and increased orders from customers gearing up to face the impact of the year 2000 on computer systems.
