Scumbria,
RE:"Is it possible that Intel hasn't been completely forthcoming about this
CPUID issue?"...

I keep telling ya. The CP-ID thing is a conspiracy between Intel and Software makers. The buying public will wake up to it way to late.
Reminds me of the movie "Tommyknockers" by Steven King. By the time people figured it out, the aliens had infiltrated. In this case. The CPU-ID will be infiltrated in "harmless" dormant form, then in a year or two, you'll be asked to turn it on. Then if you don't and protest by thinking you'll be able to find software that doesn't ask, you'll come to the realization, there isn't any. Who are the software makers going to support? Intel of course.
I see the CPU-ID as a virus waiting to be activated by force.
And AMD can't make enough chips to make a boycott of Intel a viable option. I gues they should have kept IBMs foundry on line. It was getting better yields wasn't it?
