U.S. government says "Vitamin O" really salt water
WASHINGTON, March 15 (Reuters) - The federal government charged on Monday that health claims for a ''nutritional supplement'' called ''Vitamin O'' were blatantly false and that the product appeared to be nothing more than salt water.
The ads, which the Federal Trade Commission said have appeared in USA Today and other newspapers as well as on the Internet, claim that ''Vitamin O'' can cure or prevent such diseases as cancer, heart disease and lung disease.
The FTC said it sought preliminary injunctions against Rose Creek Health Products Inc., of Kettle Falls, Wash., and a sister corporation, The Staff of Life Inc., along with Donald Smyth, president and owner.
The complaint, authorized by a vote of 4-0 of the Federal Trade Commission, was filed in Federal District court in Spokane, Wash.
A person who answered the telephone at Staff of Life said the product was available for $20. No company official was available to comment on the government action.
