If Intel consolidates all functionality on their processors they will no longer have open architecture to market and its support base will erode.. Such a move will invite direct competition for the next generation architecture and may even expedite this development. Open architecture is a focus manufactures can support. At some point I think Intel will have to introduce a new platform just to overcome the technical limitations of the 86 based systems. I don’t think Intel wants to invite competition to this marketplace just yet. The forces of technical considerations verses market demands have yet to be placed out. I personally feel the market will never retreat to closed architecture. This industry is built on growth from non proprietary systems.
