I thought that Office 2000 was to be released in the 4th quarter

That's right. I didn't notice that the quote from the product manager messes up the quarter calculation. It said that RC0 (the first release candidate) has gone out as a technical beta. What that means is that they're right on schedule for the fourth quarter release. The next step, after the raft of last-minute bugs is quashed, is RTM -- release to manufacturing -- when Office development stops and the bits are shuttled over to the folks who make the CDs. From that point it takes a month or so before it shows up on store shelves. That means 5 to 6 (and certainly no more than 8) weeks before release, which is, as you point out, the fourth quarter and not the first.

The good news for the stock is that the heavy publicity push starts right about the time of RTM, to fully stoke up the market for the release.
