I do it the easy way: walk through an expensive mall, and observe the men and the women. Walk through a poor neighborhood, and do the same. Conclude. I would not claim that the conclusion is statistically demonstrable, only that you will probably come up with very similar observations almost anywhere.

It certainly does not hold true everywhere. Once long ago a film director friend and I (both poor and skinny) were invited to the home of a wealthy producer to discuss a project over lunch. His wife, two daughters, and daughter in law were present; all were built like industrial refrigerators. After lunch I recall them discussing the various reducing centers in town, which ones cost more, which ones required effort, and so on. All seemed interested. Throughout the discussion they were shovelling down large chunks of the several ornately frosted cakes that graced the table. The director and I agreed later that we'd have given almost anything to record the scene on film.

Proves nothing, but it is never wise to pass up a chance for an amusing anecdote.
