What IPM used is not rocket science. They used standard geochemical techniques that mining companies use eveyday.

These techniques measure every element in a sample. The trick for IPM is to economically recover what the geochem analysis shows is in the dirt. Conventional smelting (fire assay) and acid leaching did not recovery a very high percent

This is what the breakthrough is all about recovering 0.25 oz/ton Au.
using a new leaching technique.

You can think of IPM as technology or new mining play, similiar to early 1980's and heap leaching. Without heap leaching there would be no mines in Nevada today.
