Cisco,

I have a few concepts that have been prancing around in my head lately. Please allow me the opportunity to share them on your board......like you have a say at this point.<g>

I have been thinking.... (I know.... I weaken the nation when I do that)....... we have an A.A. program but what about an A.A.A. program?

A.A.A. = Adopt An Addict

Compassion instead of sentencing may be what is required for addicts who are convicted of possesion. That compassion can come from school aged children who figuratively adopt local areas addicts and raise monies to help them rehab or detox. The addicts in return can act as reverse role model mentors, and the kids will have an opportunity to see first hand where addiction leads. A sobering consequence. Tough love.... showing young kids what the real world is about.... but one that they probably won't easily forget.

A.A.A....thought number two.....

let's assume that the U.R.O.D. technique of detox offered by C.I.T.A. (DTOX) is selected as the treatment of choice for detoxing addicts. Now we know that 70% of the federal prisoners are imprisoned for drug offenses. Lets assume that a portion of them are also addicted and require detoxification. Out on the street we have a rising number of sellers and users that will enter the penal system at some point.

Wouldn't it be economically prudent to offer free detoxification treatment to ANY AND ALL = A.A.A. street addicts so as to avert the cost of their incarceration down the road??? Think about the monies that the Federal government would save and the humanistic approach of attempting to help someone help themselves. If we offer free detox treatments and follow ups perhaps we will see a change in the way things work. One has to admit the present system is flawed if we knowingly predict that we will require twice as many prisons twelve years from now to house drug related offenses. What is wrong with this picture?
