Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $11.1 billion in January, up 1.2 percent from January 1998, but down about 2 percent from December, the Semiconductor Industry Association said today.

January 1999 sales were the second highest for that month in nearly a decade, and it was the first time in almost a year that sales in any single month topped the year-ago total, the trade group said.

While year-to-year figures compared favorably, January chip sales fell 1.9 percent from December on a global basis. The trade group attributed the decline to shorter work schedules after the holidays.

January sales are historically sluggish compared with sales in December, it said.
