Israel Cracks down on Second Coming Sects.
by David Sharrock (London Observer)

In this ambition (rebuilding the Third Temple), Jewish and Christian extremists coincide, since both believe the reconstruction of the Jewish temple is a prerequisite for the return and appearance of their Messiah. The difference is that, having achieved this goal, the Christians believe all the Jews and Muslims will either be converted to the true faith - theirs - or be destroyed in the battle of Armageddon.

The question is to what extent Israel's government is taking seriously the threats posed by the year-2000 celebrations.

An $11 million package was announced in November to beef up security around the Temple Mount (third holiest Muslim site), including installation of closed-circuit cameras and metal detectors.

The Palestinians are worried, too. The leading Palestinian newpaper, Al Quds, opined: "Israel must use an iron fist against these lunatics who have the 'Year 2000' disease. The crises facing the peace process are more than enough."

Meron Benvenisti, former deputy mayor of Jerusalem and chronicler of its troubled history, takes a cynical view of Israel's position.

"What possible benefit could Israel derive from millions of Christians visiting the holy sites of their religion - emphasizing that Jerusalem, Nazareth and Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) do not belong exclusively to the Jews but are rather the subject of religious devotion by hundreds of millions demanding recognition of their spiritual interests?" he asked.
