PRI Automation Receives AMHS Order From First 300mm Semiconductor Pilot Line Automation Milestone at European/US Joint Venture
BILLERICA, Mass., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRIA), a leader in semiconductor factory automation, today announced the receipt of an order for an Automated Material Handling System (AMHS) at the world's first 300mm semiconductor pilot line. Semiconductor300 is a joint venture of Siemens' Semiconductor and Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. The order is for an intrabay line and includes the Turbo Stocker 300(TM), TransNet(TM) material control software, and PRI's new AeroLoader(TM) Overhead Hoist Transport (OHT) system.
"This is one of the early milestones in the industry's transition to 300mm," said Mitch Tyson, PRI president and chief executive officer. "We have been investing heavily in our 300mm products during the downturn and are excited to be participating in the industry's first 300mm pilot. This is our first opportunity to demonstrate our 300mm intrabay capabilities."
PRI has already established a product and support presence at Semiconductor300 through its OEM products division by supplying 300mm wafer- handling robotics and front end systems to a number of process and yield management OEM suppliers.
Semiconductor300 announced they have achieved the first product on 300mm, a 0.25 micron 64M DRAM chip representing leading edge manufacturing technology for the semiconductor industry. Control production of 300mm wafers will occur when the company demonstrates a reduction in overall cost per chip by about 30 percent compared to current state-of-the-art 200mm technology. Moving to larger wafers will enable the two companies to produce roughly 2.5 times more chips per wafer. Semiconductor300 represents a total R&D expenditure of more than DM 1 billion (US$595 million).
Siemens' Semiconductor Group, based in Munich, is the 10th largest semiconductor manufacturer worldwide and is a leading provider of integrated circuits, memory products, RF components, chip card ICs, discrete and power semiconductors, sensors and fiber optic components. The comprehensive product line of Siemens Semiconductor serves a wide range of customers active in telecommunications, automotive and consumer electronics, data processing and automation.
As the world's number one producer of embedded processors, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector offers multiple Digital DNA(TM) solutions which enable its customers in the consumer, networking and computing, transportation, and wireless communications market, to create new business opportunities. Motorola's worldwide semiconductor sales were $7.3 billion in 1998.
