Korea Post Office Selects Symbol Technologies' SPT 1500 Pocket-sized
Computer for Mail Sortation - BW, 01:34 p.m Mar 15, 1999 Eastern

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 1999--Symbol
Technologies (NYSE: SBL) today announced that it has supplied the Korea Post
Office with its pocket-sized SPT 1500 computers for a key role in the Automatic
Mail & Parcel Data Processing project led by the Korea Ministry of Information &
Communication. The goal of this sizable project is to improve customer service to
the national population through technology.

Symbol provides more than 50 public and private mail delivery
services throughout the world with technology solutions. In the
U.S., each one of the 300,000 United States Postal Service mail
carriers will use a Symbol hand-held computer to scan and
confirm delivery of certified, express and registered mail.

The Korea Post Office has more than 5,000 mail stations in South
Korea and more than 12,000 postal carriers. It is responsible for
the delivery of mail and parcels throughout the country. One of
the services that the Korea Post Office provides is assured
registered parcel/mail delivery, which gives customers proof of
delivery, as well as tracking and tracing capabilities.

More than 1,000 SPT 1500 computers, which are based on the
popular 3Com PalmPilot architecture, are now being used in the
Automatic Data Process in some distribution centers across the
country. Each of the 12,000 postal carriers is expected to carry
a computer during the delivery of registered parcels/mail. The
SPT 1500 is being considered for that task.

Mail carriers now key in all delivery information and capture the customers'
signature on a delivery note. This old process is time-consuming and has a high
error rate. Carriers also experience fatigue from the manual data entry. But with the
customized SPT 1500, which reads a special Code 3 of 5 barcode on the
parcel/mail, carriers simply scan the barcode on the registered parcel/mail and obtain
the customer's signature directly on the SPT 1500 terminal as proof of delivery.

All delivery information can then be uploaded to the server. The ability to upload
information substantially reduces processing time by eliminating physical data entry
and results in instant availability of shipment information through the network. The
new process also helps to increase accuracy and reduce operator fatigue.

Mr. S. Namgung, an officer from the Ministry of Information and
Telecommunications in Korea said, "The SPT 1500 helps to give faster, more
reliable service to our customers. It replaces a slower, error-prone, manual key
entry consignment note system. We believe this technological breakthrough will
drastically improve customer satisfaction. The successful completion of the project
will set a milestone in building a high-tech national IS infrastructure."

"We are very pleased to be part of this exciting project. Symbol has been a dominant
player in providing IT solutions to transportation logistics related markets
worldwide. Postal applications is one of the markets that Symbol would like to
focus on. The Korea Post Office success story has strengthened Symbol's position

postal organizations worldwide," said Tomo Razmilovic, President & COO,

Looks like the PalmPilot is going to be EVERYWHERE! 3Com
should be hard pressed to keep up with production and enjoy
very high future royalties from their partnerships.
