ZDNet recently did a consumer poll asking what people wanted most from a "convergence" (TV/PC/Internet) device.

#1 answer: Video-on-demand (38%).
#2 answer: Pause, fast-forward, or rewind a program (25%)
#3 answer: Surf the Internet over your TV (21%)

Polls about future products are always difficult to interpret because when you ask someone whether they want something that doesn't exist today, many people lack the imagination (at least within the timeframe of answering the question) to consider what something "might" do in the future when they don't really have a clear picture of what that something is, or might be capable of. However, it is unusual to get such high rankings for anything when you are talking about consumer use of future technology - ratings of 5% or 10% can be quite good. When you see such strong ratings on future products as in the top three answers here, it indicates a huge underlying need. The first two items are basically video on demand; the third item is the infrastructure that will provide that capability.

As VOD becomes more widely available, we can expect that the demand for all three of these - and for many things most of us can't even imagine today because the paradigms don't exist yet - increase further.
