Burt,

I remember spending a day in the summer of 1978 test driving various Japanese and American small cars. It was the first time I was buying my own car, so the memory is quite vivid.

I drove Toyotas, Datsuns, Fords, and GMCs that day, and was thoroughly disappointed with all of them. At the end of the day I went to the Honda dealership. I was not considering buying a Honda because the cars were so small and looked like pieces of junk.

It took about 5 seconds driving the Civic to recognize that the handling and acceleration were in a class well above the competition. The stickshift motion was smooth as silk. I bought the car on the spot at quite a savings over what I would have paid for a Pinto or a Datsun. About 2 or 3 years later Honda began introducing normal sized cars, and started the process of pushing their prices up.
