No. Sorry. What makes CDMA special in a cell environment is 'orthogonality' and separability which translates to resistance to interference from neighboring cells. It so happens that in order to accomplish this it is required to use very specialized equipment and thus it is much harder to build eavesdropping equipment (I could go to Fry's and get the components to build an analog scanner, but I couldn't do the same for CDMAOne). But given some expertise and a little bit of money it wouldn't be that hard to build a CDMAOne scanner.

As for compression, GSM and US-TDMA also use voice compression and there is no inherent reason that they can't use the same compression that CDMAOne does. (Note, however, that TDMA technologies cannot get the same benefit in spectrum savings which CDMAOne gets from the silent periods in a conversation. But this has little to do with the actual voice compression.) In any case, voice compression and video compression have little to do with one another.

I also understand that these same algorithms are being exploited in the Cinecomm project.
