More on the IBIA press conference, from Newswire:

"The International Biometric Industry Association (IBIA), a new
Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing the interests of the biometric industry, is announcing a set of clear principles it has adopted and will be recommending to end-users of biometrics in an effort to protect personal information when biometric technology is used both in private and public-sector applications."

This kind of effort -- trade association privacy principles -- is just a baby step, and won't be enough. But at least it is a first step. The IBIA has to be meeting with the privacy groups and OEMs to formulate a common front to protect privacy, leading to federal legislation on the subject. "Industry standards" are never enough in the public policy arena. They just aren't enforceable.
