"I am asking for some recommendations on which companies you believe would be the best positioned to thrive in this area. Put it another way, if you only could buy three stocks and you were restricted to the communication arena - which ones would you buy?"

Crazy Canuk,

Tough question to answer since there are dozens of sub-sectors within the telecom/networking sector. Then there is a gamut of market caps available to choose from. Then there are very cheap and very expensive companies. Low tech and high tech companies, etc.

I can tell you of a couple of favorites of some of us on this thread. I certainly don't speak for everyone, but two large cap companies are Tellabs and Nortel Networks.

IMHO, Tellabs and Nortel are doing a great job of transisitioning from the circuit switched world to a packet based one. Nortel has got their hand in just about everything it takes to build the new networks of tomorrow, whatever they may be. DSL (twisted copper pair) and/or HFC (cable companies coax). Tellabs is a bit more complicated, but they are doing the same with other products.

I would classify TLAB as the, "Strong, silent type." In contrast to NT, who are more like, "Number two and trying harder."

You really should go back and read about 9-12 months worth of posts, there are many interesting facts and details about a lot more players in the bandwidth game. My views above are extreme simplifications only. Further DD is definitely warranted.
