Matt,

The cost of "upgrading" a palmtop to an mp3 player would be negligible if it is bundled at the time of purchase or can be upgraded with freeware. Thus, if you have a newer palmtop you may not need an additional mp3 player.

The cost of manufacturing a Rio! may be a small fraction of the total cost presently, but there is still developmental costs, legal costs, advertising,... at a time when interest is just ramping up. Once mp3 hits full stride I believe there will be a multitude of options from several manufacturers. Perhaps some electronics powerhouses are letting DIMD cut through the brush and will follow once a path has been blazed.

I also believe that either more on-board memory or higher capacity removable memory will be preferable to the current 32 MB embedded chip and the choice of SmartMedia.
