I would have to second Mike's motion that it is really tough to pick out 3 stocks in the communications area that are best positioned to thrive in this area.

I would also agree with his initial choices of Tellabs and Nortel. I have worked with both companies for many years, know their management, engineers and products. Both are extremely solid and well positioned. Excellent investment choices. Emphasis on the investment, these are not for speculation.

I would also recommend ANTEC (ANTC) by virtue of being involved with all of HFC and their contract to supply Cornerstone to TCI (now AT&T). That deal is too big to be ignored.

In the DSL world, it's pretty wide open, but Alcatel and Paradyne are right now the best positioned, in my mind. But this is purely subjective and the DSL market is so immature right now that I wouldn't put a lot of "stock" in these suggestions. Much more DD needed on these before investing, for sure.

In the services sector, I would look very closely at Qwest and Level 3 Communications. They are both top notch network operators building lots of bandwidth capacity, and especially Level 3 who will have a native IP network as their backbone. Please note that although these 2 companies are not specifically "last mile" players, they affect the ability of the last mile to function efficiently and effectively. You can't separate the 2 in my mind. You can all the bandwidth in the world in the last mile but if there's a bottleneck at the backbone connection, it won't do you a bit of good.

Hope that helps, along with Mike's thoughts. Maybe if the field were narrowed a bit we could home in on it better.
