Maurice,

Civilization likely started out with dark skinned people. In order to survive in high sun latitudes, extra melanin was selected for in the gene pool, as protection from excess light. Even with dark skin there was still enough light to produce required amounts of vitamin D (the sun vitamin, produced in the skin).

As man moved to less sun latitudes (like northern Europe), those with less melanin were more successful because less skin pigment translated to more vitamin D production. An interesting case is the Eskimo population, who retain their dark skin because they survived on a fish diet (high in vitamin D).

I wish I knew as much about broadband and appropriate investment strategies as I do about biology. Oh well, people like you on this thread are slowly educating me.

Thanks

Craig Wilson
