UMG - news) today announced that MediaOne Express, the company's high- speed Internet
service, is available to over one million New England homes in 123 Massachusetts and New
Hampshire communities.

Four years ago, MediaOne was the first to offer Broadband services in New England. By the end
of this year, MediaOne's investment will total nearly $1.3 billion to completely upgrade over 20,000
miles of its network in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. MediaOne embarked on an aggressive
New England roll out of MediaOne Express in 1996 by upgrading the Interactive Broadband
Network that delivers its television service. The enormous capacity of Broadband allows MediaOne
to simultaneously deliver high-speed Internet, Digital Telephone Services and up to 100 channels of
television programming and on-screen interactive program guides to the home.

50 times faster than a standard phone connection.
In addition to providing residential high-speed Internet service, MediaOne has pledged to provide
free high-speed Internet access to schools in MediaOne's service area where MediaOne Express is
available. MediaOne is also providing free high-speed Internet service with partnering public
libraries to enhance their roles as community centers of learning and information. In New England,
over 320 public schools and over 30 public libraries currently enjoy this free service -- an annual
savings of over $3.5 million to these educational institutions.
