Wow, I can buy a Xeon system for $2000? Thanks for the laugh.

Heck, even on Sharky Extreme's weekly CPU price listing (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/weekly_cpu), a Pentium II Xeon running at 400 MHz and having 512K of L2 cache runs for $694. A Pentium III 500 MHz runs for $680.

The lowest Xeon is more expensive than the highest Pentium III. And it's still pretty tough to find a fully decked-out Pentium III 500 MHz system for under $2000.

Conclusion? Your comparison is invalid. No one buys Xeon or Pentium III systems if they care about price/performance ratios. They buy them if they care about pure performance.
