I heard a friend who's an atheist respond to the question of why he should remain moral if he believed there was no God.

His reply was that out of self interest the atheist should be the most moral of men because the "here and now" of his life was all that he had, so why risk engaging in immoral acts that could jeopardize his liberty with incarceration or cut it short because of disease contracted from abusive or wanton personal behavior.

I agree, though not an atheist.
