Mike, Full Metal Jackets are less deadly than standard ammunition, especially in the Kalashnikov. FMJ were developed way back when for human warfare in compliance with one of the very old conventions to not cause unnecessary pain, suffering and death to the enemy. Everyone embraced them, in part, because they figured a cleanly wounded man taxed the enemy's resources more than a dead one. (This actually got started back in the late 1800's when the Ruskies developed an exploding small arms bullet and the Tzar found out, was horrified and called a World meeting to ban the stuff - interesting story.)

The recent trend to smaller cases and FMJ bullets has caused this to get sort of turned on its ear though, since they have bad penetration characteristics and tend to tumble around and make goofy wound paths.

Most states ban the use of FMJs for hunting because they are poor killers compared to standard expanding ammunition. You do not want to get shot by a standard .308 hunting round, even if you are right outside a hospital emergency room. -ng-
