Regarding FDX, I wish I could claim that as my own, but I can't. However, I haven't forgotten the value of the logistics involved in Ecommerce.
I also believe that down the road you will see Systems Integrators in the manufacturing/ERP arena doing extremely well since the logistics of Ecommerce place a premium on just-in-time inventory capability and a requirement to maximize the ability to ramp up production to meet unexpected demand for products. That will require Ultra-modern manufacturing software/hardware to avoid inventory shortfalls or gluts.
As for retail outlets, we have only to look at CPU to see what probably lies in store(no pun intended), as geographical real estate is sacrificed for virtual real estate.
And that is what makes GNET, YHOO, AMZN, EBAY, and so many other "cyberstores" so crucial to those of us who HATE going to shopping malls.
Btw, an upcoming craze will be the ability to have clothing made to order to a perfect fit, purchased online, and delivered straight to your doorstep. The technology already exists (a UK company the name of which eludes me) where the customer can enter their exact physical dimensions (which are scanned via a system of lasers at a special kiosk), see the cyberframe of their body clothed in the garment, and when the purchase is made, an automated pattern cutter manufactures the garment to order. after which it is shipped to the customer within days.
That will put many retail garment stores out of business and turn shopping malls into ghosttowns.
Think about it when you try to decide whether or not the Internet is merely a whim.
