I too have had these experiences at Schwab. I have the sense that many option trades with them involve human steps--they check your account manually sometimes to be sure the funds are there etc etc. I think it is just inefficiency rather than by design, and I've had examples where I was better off waiting. I gave up doing options with them--they cost too much and are TOO SLOW. Currently I use Brown&Co for options. The problem there is if you make a mistake it is almost always too late to correct it. I once hit the order enter key three times when the computer seemed to lock up and was executed three times in about 10 seconds (fortunately I made three times as much on the deal).
