There's a difference. Intel told people about the serial number. Microsoft got caught with one eye looking through the keyhole.

There is another difference. Microsoft doesn't need Intel's processor serial number in order to surreptitiously collect data on its customers. Every Windows OS has its own identifier. It might not be as "permanent" as a hardware ID, but it's even worse because in order to change it, you'll have to reinstall the OS. At least you can change your CPU without much hassle.

And this is my argument all along, that the processor serial number does not usher in a new wave of Big Brother.

This is not to say that Intel should ignore the outcry, though.
