5fer needs another job, and I expect the CPQ shareholders have probably just about figured this out. He must have nightmares about DELL, wondering how he has wrecked the leading PC company and now is literally adrift in an ocean of technology with no clear direction. The sharks are circling big time. I imagine he will try to waste some more CPQ shareholder wealth by buying another beaten down company like Tandem or DEC to disguise the inevitable, but "one-time negative adjustments to earnings" have become routine for CPQ. As I said previously, I think his next big negotiation will be his severance package.

Remember, since 10/97 CPQ has gone from $39 or so (split-adjusted) to $32 today ... a tidy return of -18%. It appears DELL shareholders have fared just a bit better than that during this period! I doubt a single CPQ shareholder would turn down a trade of 5fer for Michael Dell today.
