Texas Instruments DSP Pioneer Earns Distinction with World's Largest Engineering Association

PHOENIX, Ariz., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) promoted Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN - news) digital signal processing (DSP) pioneer Panos Papamichalis to Fellow today at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing. IEEE is recognizing Papamichalis' contributions to the development and implementation of efficient DSP algorithms.

Some examples of Papamichalis' efforts include working on efficient Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs), encryption algorithms and communication algorithms implemented on TI DSP devices while he was a member of the DSP Applications Department in Houston. His research focusing on digital processing of speech signals resulted in the development applications including digital phones, wireless phones and voice over internet protocol.

''This achievement is a great honor for me,'' Papamichalis said. ''I am also very appreciative because TI has given me the opportunity to work in the exciting technology of DSP.'' Papamichalis is among an elite group of 239 distinguished IEEE members promoted to Fellow status as the Class of 1999. IEEE is the world's largest engineering society that promotes electro- and information technologies and sciences. The organization has 320,000 members.

Papamichalis, director of the TI Tsukuba Research and Development Center (TRDC) in Japan, is currently responsible for supervising research into different aspects of DSP Solutions for communications, video, audio, converters, analog and digital designs. ''My role is to broaden our view of technology needs,'' Papamichalis said. ''Essentially, I direct our groups in identifying the technologies most important to the future of TI and to align them closely with the product groups that will ultimately convert the result of R&D into successful products.''

Papamichalis became a TI Fellow in 1995. A TI Fellow is recognized as a leading TI expert who has made personal contributions critical to the success of programs important to TI such as DSP. He is the author of the book ''Practical Approaches to Speech Coding,'' Prentice-Hall, 1987, editor of ''Digital Signal Processing Applications with the TMS320 Family,'' Prentice-Hall, 1990, and he has written more than 20 papers on speech and digital-signal processing. Papamichalis holds four patents in the area of speech coding.

The worldwide leader and pioneer in digital signal processing solutions since 1982, Texas Instruments provides innovative DSP and mixed signal/analog technologies to more than 30,000 customers in the computer, wireless communications, networking, Internet, consumer, digital motor control and mass storage markets worldwide.
