I think that the market is big enough for more than one or two companies. Document Management/Imaging is just starting to be implemented around the world. The potential for revenue is huge - billions of dollars a year.

There are Document Management standards being developed that will allow all document management software to work together. This means that a Microsoft won't lock everybody out of the market by creating a proprietary standard that no one else can work with.

Finally, Open Text is successful because they are technology innovators. Their management has the vision that Documentum and Saros do not have. They are inventing this stuff and forcing the others to play catch up. They are young and hungry and they know that their existence depends on staying steps ahead of the competition. Their customers are the same kinds of companies. They are grabbing Open Text's technology because it gives them a tremendous competitive advantage over their competition. Being smaller and hungrier is an advantage for Open Text in this environment.

Check out the QUALCOMM case study at opentext.com. Here is one quote:

QUALCOMM management also cites Open Text's overall vision and willingness to partner wth clients on solutions as major factors in the decision to use Livelink. By using an intranet to streamline key business processes, QUALCOMM expects to gain a competitive advantage.
