How about 'The Poor Little War Nobody Wanted' or 'The War to End All Wars, No Really, ALL Wars, We're Not Kidding This Time So Don't Get Cocky Or I'll Knock YOU on Your Ass!' It's my understanding that the NATO Treaty provides mutual border guarantees for all member states, i.e., we've just agreed to defend the borders of three countries (Hungary, Czech Rep., Poland) each of which has been the subject of a devastating Russo-Soviet invasion. While a great deal for those folks, I think that this is EXACTLY the trap that George Washington warned us about 200+ years ago regarding 'foreign entanglements' -- it was just such a series of interlocking mutual defense treaties that precipitated WWI. While a European common defense strategy is clearly in order, and it is in the long-term interest of the US to retain close contacts with Europe, achieving this via NATO (specifically created as a defense against the USSR and the Eastern Bloc), is a mistake of potentially fatal proportions. I loathe the thought of thousands of young men and women, from either 'side', bagged and lying in a hanger for some distraught mother to come and identify, but that's who will pay if we allow our collective fear to overwhelm our common humanity. |
