Dan, the crew over at the Ballard thread told me to say, 'he can come back any time.' :-)
Dan, can you tell me if the core Heartsaver patent is 5169381 ?

After some searching of patents at patent.womplex.ibm.com,
I found VAD device 5383840, a bizarre chain drive gizmo, and VAD device 5169381, hydraulic pads that lovingly encircle the heart. This latter was devised by Bob Snyders of Missouri, granted in 1992.
Snyders references misc patents (Vineberg 2826192 1958, and Soviet Union 0200117 1963).
The Snyders device consists of a hydraulic oscillator that pumps little pads that massage the ventricles from outside. This is not too bad an idea, since it does not 'bruise' the blood cells like some stupid heart pumps that use pistons or conical pumps inside the heart!
However, the outer layer of the heart might be slightly irritated by the external pressure. The myocardium could probably care less.
TET or transcutaneous energy transfer comes from the U of Ottawa, where yours truly spent some lovely hours auditing some medical classes. Miller of U of O uses a FET oscillator that generates a fairly high frequency magnetic wave that is transmitted harmlessly ! through the chest wall. Watts and data are allowed for in the system. Data is via infrared. The TET patent is 5350413, 1994.
