*Telstra* Ziggy Switkowski seems to be a good guy, though I don't think he even has an MBA. Come to think of it, I don't think Irwin does either.

Telstra seems to be preparing for serious competition in Telecoms instead of trying to take over the world. Expect prices to crash around the world and the best operators to prosper. Operators had better be using cdmaOne. If they are using GSM they will have to time their overlays just right. Too early or too late and they'll lose their shirts. Telstra is going to batten the hatches and be tough locally.

Telstra will bid on the 2GHz auction in New Zealand on 29 March. They will win some spectrum. They'll build a network and have a single Australasian market with full roaming and easy roaming into USA. I suppose Vodafone/Hyundai/AirTouch will sell them Globalstar minutes so that Telstra customers will be able to go anywhere.

Vodafone owns and operates the GSM network in New Zealand. They'll have to overlay with WWeb at some stage.

There might be another couple of cdmaOne networks in Auckland and other main centres. Clear Communications and others will be interested.

Meanwhile, the apartheid system in New Zealand kicked in a couple of days ago with some Maori groups trying to get their greedy hands on the spectrum. They believe they have special rights because of an absurd treaty some of them agreed to in 1840 with the British who unilaterally abrogated it earlier this century.

It is a racist document with no way of making it work in the 21st century. It assumes ethnic purity and tribal ways of life. The Maori group has applied to The Waitangi Tribunal and courts for an injunction to stop the auction and cancel spectrum management rights.
