but I really feel that the individual market makers controlled this gyration or was it daytraders going flat? Could be either/Or. Daytraders also get out before the end of the day (good ones do anyway), and don't hold position overnight. Going flat is a normal event towards the end of the day. That's why when you have a spike up in the last hour, everyone takes note because that's a clear sign of accumulation or short covering. But yesterday's action seemed normal for a stock up $12-21 a share. Daytraders got out at the end, and the mmkrs took the price down with a vengeance to nab those who were getting greedy looking for that final bounce (which did occur if you look at the ticker).
