"B-52 Bombers Shot Down Over Kosovo. All Onboard Feared Dead."
I think that a salvo of so-called intelligent missiles (Tomahawk, cruise missiles,...) loosed off over Serbia's strategic spots would be much more appropriated.
As prince Metternich put it, back in the early 1800s, ''War is the continuation of diplomacy/politics by other means'', hence what's the politics at stake in former Yugoslavia? It's quite straightforward: every day you hear about ethnic cleansing, populism, xenophobic threats, nationalism, etc. Make no mistake: what's happening today in Yougoslavia in a paroxystic fashion is slowly spreading into ''civilised'' Europe in a more ''politically correct'' pattern.
For you, Americans, this Yugoslavian mess is a European challenge; yet, for the European layman, Yugoslavia was never part of the Western European fabric... The Dalmatian archipelago was renowned for its touristic resorts as much as Italy's Eastern coast and that was it. That's why when the Bosnian crisis unfolded several years ago, the whole of Europe's public opinion learnt that there were Muslims living in the heart of Europe! So, save a few intellectuals, most people over here viewed the Balkan crisis pretty much as some remote African squabble... If the Serbs were to prevail in their ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Kosovo,... then this would send a green light to other West-European fascist nuts --not to speak of Russian populists. Is it in the interest of the United States to favor such a reactionary political environment in the world's largest economy? |
