Mike, Here is my take on the sec filing from T. Rowe Price. Check out stocksmart.com and search for Qdel share price- Click on "Quidel Corp"- then click on "Top Mutual Fund Holders" as of 6-30-96- this page says institutions have 45 days after the end of a quarter to file a statement of their holdings - sure enough, Quidel's #1 mutual fund shareholder as of 6-30-96 was non other than T. Rowe Price Small Cap Value Fund w/ 900,000 shares. I think the recent filing by T. Rowe Price just indicates they have increased their position in Qdel by approx. 220,000 shares during the 6 months between 6-30-96 and 12-31-96. This explanation is as good as I can do - it isn't entirely satisfactory to me because my EDGAR search for QDEL filings doesn't have any similar filings for T. Rowe Price for the quarter ended 9-30-96- I think the "45 day filing" requirement mentioned on Stocksmart may be slightly different than the schedule 13 filing recently done by T. Rowe Price- Their recent filing was, I believe, done under a different statute or regulation as an "owner" of greater than 5% of the stock rather than a filing as an "instition". I may be all wet on this one - and I may have shown my ignorance - but SEC filings are not my area of preferred reading. Anyone else out there have any info on this filing??
