(PR NEWSWIRE) Brooktrout Technology Signs OEM Agreement With Dell
Brooktrout Technology Signs OEM Agreement With Dell

Dell's PowerEdge Server Incorporates Brooktrout Technology's Instant RAS
products

SALEM, N.H., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Brooktrout Technology, a Brooktrout
company (Nasdaq: BRKT), today announced it has signed an OEM agreement with
Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL), the No. 2 server vendor in the
United States and No. 4 worldwide, to incorporate Brooktrout Technology's
Instant RAS(R) products into its PowerEdge(R) servers. Brooktrout Technology's
Instant RAS product family delivers robust, business-class remote access to
small and mid-size businesses and enterprise workgroups, taking advantage of
the routing and remote access capabilities built into Windows NT to support
intranets and extranets.
Last week Dell announced it is incorporating Brooktrout Technology's
Instant RAS products into its workgroup and departmental PowerEdge servers,
providing new features that enable customers to connect employees in diverse
geographic locations to their corporate networks via analog or digital
connections. The server bundle, which Dell will initially offer in the United
States, Canada and Europe, can also help smaller businesses save money by
providing Internet access to their employees through a central server rather
than paying for individual Internet accounts.
"With a 90% forecast revenue growth for digital-based Open Systems 1999 is
shaping up to be the 'Year of the Open Systems RAS,'" said Brad Baldwin,
Director of Remote Access at International Data Corporation. "Reasons for the
expected growth include the release of next generation high-end product,
prices now at competitive levels to dedicated RAS equipment, major PC vendors
such as Dell Computer adding remote access as a value-add technology to their
product line, and the pending release by Microsoft of Windows 2000."
A PC Server with Open Systems RAS enables end users to leverage their
server investment across multiple applications. No longer do users have to
purchase expensive proprietary systems for remote access. Open RAS provides
the same remote access as proprietary boxes, and also allows for integration
of off the shelf, best-in-category software packages to enhance the network.
Corporations standardizing on PC Servers are streamlining administration,
management, training, and maintenance while reducing ownership investments.
"Open RAS is the next wave for PC server manufacturers and is driving
network convergence," said Jon Sirota, president, Brooktrout Technology's
Salem Division. "Microsoft has given the industry remote access software and
vendors like Dell are responding to customer demands for a more complete 'out-
of-the-box' server solution. Bring these together with our Instant RAS cards
and businesses now have an easier, more reliable RAS solution that provides a
cost efficient way to connect its road warriors."
The Brooktrout Technology Open RAS products for PC Servers include the
Brooktrout Netaccess IRAS-8A and IRAS-24A cards that support V.90/56K, legacy
analog and ISDN calls coming into a PC server, using just one dial-up line.
Compatible with Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft BackOffice Small Business
Server (SBS), these remote access cards expand the functionality of servers.
The IRAS-8A card supports approximately 50 remote users per card using Basic
Rate ISDN. These cards are ideal for the small- to medium-sized businesses
that want Internet-enabled electronic mail, web-site hosting, web access and
faxing. For larger applications, the IRAS-24A offers T1 and ISDN Primary Rate
access supporting up to 24 simultaneous calls and hundreds of remote access
users. Additionally, international versions are also available -- the IRAS-8A
ST and the IRAS-30A. All Brooktrout Netaccess Instant RAS cards include
Remote Access Manager (RAM), software that provides dynamic snapshots of all
RAS port statistics with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. RAM allows
analysis of port resource management, session usage, access control and much
more.
Brooktrout Technology's Salem division (formerly Netaccess) brings a
tremendous wealth of remote access technology and expertise to Brooktrout
Technology. Brooktrout Technology's ISDN and analog modem solutions are in
use across the communications industry providing a myriad of Wide Area
Networking solutions together with some of the biggest names in the business.
Brooktrout Technology is now bringing that expertise to the PC Server
manufacturers with its Instant RAS product line.
