Allen's empire is fueled by his vast MSFT holdings, a company he has no meaningful influence upon.

He is and has always been a member of Microsoft's very small board of directors. Board members may not have influence on the day-to-day operations of a company, but they do have a meaningful influence on the general business practices of the company.

Otherwise, I agree. He doesn't have a midas touch. Wired did an article a few years ago that claimed he has just the opposite. His AOL and TicketMaster investments are good examples of getting in and out of stakes at the wrong time on both counts. Starwave is something quite different. It built itself into one of the prime web locations under his ownership. He sold out of that one only after Disney had become Starwave's prime client through their purchase of ESPN and ABC. Disney wanted control. Allen was willing to give up control of what had become a mature company (and one which Disney seems intent on destroying).
