I remember when I heard that on the radio and ran to the phone to call up my sister. I said, "GUESS who just left his loyal wife who stuck with him through thick and thin for another woman! Guess! Guess!" I gave her a million hints, but could she think of Hawking, of course not! The world is hilarious. In truth, though, I suspect the Marxist analysis would be the correct one here. Find out what the nurse who married him had in the way of other life options... and you'd probably understand what happened. She was taking care of him all the time, traveling with him, anyway, for a fixed nurse's salary and low status. With the marriage... well, you can see how the pros and cons might look. And a heart is malleable.
