NYSE asks U.S. Filter to comment on stock
NEW YORK, March 17 (Reuters) - The New York Stock Exchange said on Wednesday it had asked U.S. Filter Corp. (NYSE:USF - news) to issue a public statement indicating whether there were any corporate developments which may explain the company's unusual stock activity.

Shares of Palm Desert Calif.-based U.S. Filter, a maker of water treatment and filtration systems, were among the most actively traded shares on the New York Stock Exchange as the stock jumped $3.375 to $28.375 in afternoon trading.

The Exchange said U.S. Filter stated that its policy is not to comment on unusual market activity or rumors.

Options traders in Chicago speculated earlier Wednesday that ''something was going on'' at U.S. Filter as the company's calls drew strong interest Wednesday morning, driving implied volatility higher.

Company officials were not immediately available to return phone calls placed by Reuters.>
