One of my brothers is an EE at LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Labs) since the middle 80s, and about Reagan's vision of a "starwars" laser-defense system, he said that the concept was at least 20 years away from being doable, given current states of technology in the middle 80s. I trust my brother knows what he's talking about, since he has worked extensively with lasers, both high-power lasers that can "splash" metal on contact (I've seen the result), but lasers that shoot neutron beams into the reactor core of a fusion nuclear reactor. Anyway, though he scoffed at the concept of "Starwars", he always said that he was for it (funding the project) , because it created many great careers for people in scientific research fields.

So whether or not they ever get a workable "Missile Defense", I'm all for researching it. Might as well pay people to do good scientific research, rather than have Clinton give it all away to countries all over the world, who hate us all the more for "meddling" in their affairs.
