I'm not sure the discussion would lead anywhere. Most of you know by now that "lightweight, long standby time CDMA phones" have flopped badly in Japan, resulting in two product recalls from leading manufacturers (Toshiba and Panasonic). In some cases the actual standby times were less than one third of the number cited by the manufacturers. The "churn" rate of Japanese CDMA subscribers has skyrocketed as a result.

There's no law against denial - if people don't want to discuss these issues that's OK. But having a debate that blithely ignores substantial news in favor of ephemera is pointless.

It might be a good idea to evaluate the CDMA models arriving to USA after they actually reach the market. We've now had a string of CDMA handset problems spanning two years and half a dozen manufacturers. With this track record I wouldn't make judgments one way or the other at this stage.

I'm more than willing to discuss Nokia's "quality problems". Like the fact that the issue surfaced in "Expressen", a Swedish tabloid. You know - "Clinton's Secret Love Child With Black Prostitute!!" and that kind of stuff. If you ever visit Scandinavia you might want to pick up an issue so you'd see what I mean.

As a rule I don't base investment decisions on information I gather at a supermarket check-out line. But I did e-mail about the Silicon Investor interest in this story to "Expressen" editors. I think the Qcom thread reaction might make page 14 next week... "Expressen Scoop Stuns Wall Street!!" or something like that.
