Annette:OT Rose of Sharon is more shrub than tree. Some friends have a lovely border of this and its about 8 or so feet high. I'm pretty sure they have them plants 3' apart (to form a hedge). The same friends with the above have deer problems. What the husband does is pee around the fruit trees. This does keep the deer away. few sprays are also sold that work. The only real problem with the pee and some of the sprays is that one must 'reapply' after each rainfall. Too bad you don't live closer. We could help each other with our digging tasks today. Lynn
