NOVALOG Part Selected for Motorola Pager; Irvine Sensors Subsidiary in Multiple Consumer Electronics Applications

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- NOVALOG, INC., a consolidated and privately financed subsidiary of Irvine Sensors Corporation (Nasdaq: IRSN - news; BSE: ISC - news) announced today that Motorola, Inc. has chosen the NOVALOG MiniSIR2(TM) Wireless Infrared Transceiver Module for use in its PageWriter® 2000X two-way pager with e-mail capabilities* which is planned to go into production soon.

The application in a Motorola paging product further extends NOVALOG's market penetration in consumer electronics applications of the Infrared Data Association's (IrDA®) protocol for wireless infrared data transfer. 3Com's Palm Computing® platform and family of connected organizers are using the MiniSIR2 module in the new Palm IIIx(TM) and Palm V(TM). Citizen Electronics employs NOVALOG's SIRComm(TM) transceiver chip in the IrDA module it supplies for Sony's new PocketStation® PDA, a game accessory for the Sony PlayStation®, recently introduced in Japan. The MiniSIR2 module is also in the following products displayed at Irvine Sensors' recent annual meeting:

-- Palmax PD-96(TM) - PDA organizer - Taiwan

-- Tekram iRMATE(TM) - Stand-alone IrDA adapter for the PC - Taiwan

Ernest J. Abeytia, NOVALOG's Chief Operating Officer said, ''Consumer electronics applications such as connected organizers, cellular phones, pagers, and digital still cameras are the most active growth segment of the wireless infrared market. As evidenced by the increasing number of such applications using NOVALOG's components, we believe we are well-positioned to participate in that market expansion.'' John Chimoures, NOVALOG's Director of Sales, noted, ''According to Strategies Unlimited, the worldwide infrared data link market is expected to be approximately $65 million in 1999, and then nearly double over the following two years. Much of that growth is being driven by consumer electronics.''
