RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- May 13, 1996 -- Intel Corporation and BroadBand Technologies, Inc., today announced a joint effort enabling telephone companies to deliver Internet access to computer users via high-speed residential fiber to the curb (FTTC) connections. The companies will work together to develop technology that allows PCs to access the Internet and the World Wide Web at significantly accelerated speeds compared with standard telephone modems. The companies will develop technology for PC interface cards that will support two way Internet and World Wide Web access, at speeds greater than 1,000 times of today's high-speed home PC telephone modems. Under the agreement, Intel will design and develop hardware and software technology to enable home PCs to use new fiber to the curb networks which are now being tested by phone companies for accessing the Internet and other online services. Intel will license this technology to BroadBand Technologies, who intends to offer PC interface cards along with its Fiber Loop Access (FLX ) System. "Fiber to the curb along with other broadband network options such as ISDN and xDSL will prove to be very important to the future of this market segment. We view high speed access to the PC as a key facet for PC market segment growth," states Avram Miller, vice president, Business Development at Intel. "Intel welcomes the chance to work with BroadBand Technologies in delivering this technology." "Personal computer customers are increasingly demanding interactive information and entertainment services from their service providers of choice. Our solution will enable telephone companies to bundle these lucrative services from one phone jack in their customers homes, delivering hundreds of channels of TV, electronic commerce over the World Wide Web, personal videoconferencing and access to their computer networks at work," Salim A. L. Bhatia, president and chief executive officer of BroadBand Technologies said. "BroadBand Technologies is committed to helping the phone companies deliver an array of broadband services over their broadband networks. The BroadBand-Intel effort is an important step toward this goal." Products resulting from the joint development efforts are expected to be available from BroadBand Technologies in 1997, during the same time frame that phone companies are expected to begin mass deployment of advanced broadband services based on their new switched digital networks. BroadBand Technologies Inc., based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., was founded in 1988. Its mission is to deliver products and services that enable network and service providers to offer consumers robust, economical electronic access to advanced communication, entertainment and information services.
