More competition?

"FROM SLUDGE may come fuel oil and fertilizer, thanks to new technology."

A process that converts wastewater sludge into a low-grade diesel fuel and a technique that turns the ammonia-nitrogen found in sewage into ammonia salts that can be used as fertilizer are two technologies under review by a unit of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation in Washington for the Environmental Protection Agency. ThermoEngery Corp., Little Rock, Ark., holds patents on both processes, which focus on turning municipal waste into products.

ThermoEngery teamed up with a Foster Wheeler Corp. unit to test the fertilizer process at a pilot plant in New York last year and says it is now talking with fertilizer manufacturers about commercial use. Another procedure that converts sludge into a fuel for marine boilers, incinerators and other such equipment, will be tested at a plant being constructed in Colton, Calif.
