Thankfully, with the new UK policies come the possibility of legal challenge, since fines are involved, and the labeling used can be proven to be not only misleading, but flat out incorrect. Further, it might even be proven that genetic modification using imprecise techniques is less safe, not more. So both the premise of the label, and the implication of it are extremely vulnerable.
This is because scientists all over the world have done many studies proving genetic modification is already a characteristic of modern agricultural products. Further, there are genetic differences between fruits and vegetables that look the same, but would carry the "GM-Free" label. To make things worse, genetic differences in the supposedly "GM-Free" varieties are not subject to strict regulation based on genetics, and are hence more dangerous than so-called "GM" counterparts in this respect.
In short, if you claim the world is flat, you had better be able to prove it. My guess is somebody will legally challenge this.
