Drop in exports widens overall trade gap to $17 billion

WASHINGTON, March 18 — America's trade deficit soared to an all-time high of $17 billion in January as global financial troubles pushed U.S. exports down further while imports of autos, consumer goods and food were climbing to record highs. The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the trade deficit shot up 21 percent from December's $14.1 billion level and surpassed the old monthly record of $16.7 billion set last August.
